Organic ferilizer from food waste

Turning food waste into organic fertilizer creates economic and enviromental benefits, which can improve soil health, help reduce erosion and improve water quality.

By composting your unwanted food waste, you are energizing the soil for future plant growth. Organic fertilizer is the best food for the soil, it is a good source of nutrients and mironutrients for the plants which are essential for them to grow. Even when all actions have been taken to use your wasted food, certain inedible parts will still remain and can be turned into compost to feed and nourish the soil. Like yard waste, food waste scraps can also be composted.

What is compost?

Compost is created by combining organic waste such as wasted food, yard trimmings and manures, in the right ratios into piles, rows or vessels. You can add bulking agents such as wood chips which will accelerate the brekdown of organic materials. Mature compost is created using high temperatures to destroy pathogens and weed seeds that natural decomposition does not destroy.

In order to have a clear view on what can be used for organic fertilizer, here are some ideeas.

1. Banana peels
Banana peels are rich in phosphorus and potassium. Using them will encourage growth, increase fruits and flowers, and boost the overall appearance of your plants.

2. Eggshells
Eggshells are rich in magnesium, potassium, iron and phosphorus along with calcium carbonate which helps plants to grow lush and green. You'll need to crush the eggshells finely and mix them with the growing medium for best results.

3. Onions
Puree the leftovers parts of onions and mix them in a liter of water, then leave the solution for at least 2 days. Once the color of the solution changes, strain the liquid and use it to water plants after diluting in a 1:1 ratio with water.

4. Coffee
Always save the coffee grounds! They improves the seed germination and the overall growth of the plant. You can also add coffee grounds to the compost bin to make it rich in nitrogen, calcium, potasium, magnesium and trace minerals.

5. Vegetable water after boiling
The essential minerals such as phosphorus, nitrogen and calcium are leached out from vegetables into the water they are boiled in. You can easily add the goodness the these minerals to your garden by watering your plants with this solution. This will help the plants to grow at a faster rate, resulting in lush growth with better flower and fuit production.

6. Fruit peels
Fruit peels are rich in lipid, protein, ash, crude fiber and carbohydrates along with many other nutrients.
Boil peels of different fruits in water 10-15 minutes and let it steep overnight. Mix in the ratio of 1:1 with water and use it on your plants once in 6-8 weeks for lush, along with enhanced flower and fruit production.

Stay well naturally! 💚

Tools used in the project

In order to achieve a remarkable result throughout some activities that involve people with a common aim , there have to be implemented some tools that would help in learning and understanding a topic, so that is why some magic tools are important for a project that provides sustainability, too. Furthermore, these are the ones used in our LLLS journey: Firstly, some icebreakers aka activities to get to know each other For example, making a circle with the whole group so each person, one by one, says his/her name and associates it with an animal and a gesture. Another game is the Clock game: the one that help people meet and discuss on a topic for about 3-4 minutes for every hour of a clock (12 meeting per general) Secondly, to start the team-building there is another activity by staying in a circle with eyes closed and trying to take 2 random hands and then untying the formed knot of hands connecting to the nature and learning more about what it means, what everybody is doin...

Biggest way to help out nature

We think that one of the biggest problems that surrounds the whole wide world is mass cutting of trees, especially without planting new ones for the sustainability for the environment. Our video and pantomi demonstrates what we think is the best way to combat this.

Volunteering and what we can gain from it

Volunteering is a certain activity or work done for free by a person or a group. People can volunteer in various fields. We were brainstorming and came up with many areas of volunteering.  It can be done in NGOs /non governmental organization/, environmental organizations, health care centers, rescue centres, community centres, orphanages, festivals, events, etc. Most common activities can be cleaning the nature, building or renovating public places, harvesting crops, teaching, taking care of the disabled, old or sick, running a bio farm, etc. We also can be volunteering inside in offices to help small businesses or non-profit organizations, organizing summer camps for kids, helping in red cross, public libraries, organizing clothes or book swaps, helping in animal shelters or helping with some events for example concerts or charity gatherings. But why do people volunteer if they do not get any reward for it? The truth is we can gain so much more than money in our life. In offices ...
